Week 8!!!
Since last class was a bit of a heat storm... I thought it would be helpful to answer one of our quiz questions for my blog this week.
Hopefully this helps!
3: What was meant by a “trading post empire”? Give an example of one.
This was in the early 16th to early 17th Century era. This was first built by Portuguese mariners. Trading Post Empires were meant as an attempted to control trade routes by forcing merchants to pay duties at specified trading sites. By the mid 16th century Portuguese merchants had over 50 trading posts between West Africa and East Asia. "Afonso d'Alboquerque led Portuguese navy during Trading Post Empire, and sought to control Indian Ocean trade by forcing all merchants to purchase safe-conduct passes". (online source)
The significance on these Trading Post Empires was because they established controlle trade throughout the Indian Ocean by the Portuguese, and spread the knowledge of Asian waters to other nations.
